Maple, Willow, Ash, and Oak, the trees make no issue of their differences.
When the hour is not so young, when the fire has gone low, and I have run out of things to distract me from my wounded heart, perhaps there is healing in the warm quiet of allowing it all.
They talk about angels, but what if the angels are within, and all we need to do is unfold our wings.
Angels of Mercy
Most people don’t know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don’t get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.
I've always liked the time before dawn because there's no one around to remind me who I'm supposed to be, so it's easier to remember who I am
She said she usually cried at least once each day not because she was sad, but because the world was so beautiful & life was so short.
Don't take your family for granted, because people who love you even after they know you don't come along every day.
When I die, she said, I'm coming back as a tree with deep roots & I'll wave my leaves at the children every morning on their way to school & whisper tree songs at night in their dreams. Trees with deep roots know about the things children need.
Earthmother (for Heidi)
When I think of you, it is with thoughts of butterflies and flowers. I did not know their names until you told me, like a precious secret, like this knowledge was the only true wealth, and how lucky that we could be rich together. Perhaps I would not know to love the world from the roots up, as you do, without your quiet enthusiasm for everything that grows.
It might seem a perilous undertaking of the spirit, to see what beauty is still alive in this world of smoke, and speed, and fear, but as I question if there is hope for us in the times to come, I remember you in your garden, smiling, and showing us that hope is everywhere if you know where to look
Easier With Two
I said, I don’t know how to do this, and you offered me a hand, and suddenly we were in the boat together.
Falling Into Place
deciding everything is falling into place perfectly as long as you don't get too picky about what you mean by place. Or perfectly
for a long time, she flew only when she thought no one else was watching
They drove south one winter until they could stand outside with no coats on & we never saw them again.
There are invisible lines connecting everything together, and I am particularly fond of the one that connects me to you.
Let's talk about being brave. Put on a mask. Walk into the room with all of its illness to save someone's life. Every day you do this for people you hardly know. Some might call it a job, but I think we should call it what it really is. Love.
The first time her laughter unfurled its wings in the wind, we knew that the world would never be the same.
There is a way up toward the better world we have seen in our dreams, but these stairs won't build themselves.
The first time his laughter unfurled its wings in the wind, we knew that the world would never be the same.
Illusion of Control
If you hold on to the handle, she said, it's easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it's more fun if you just let the wind carry you.
In my dream, the angel shrugged & said, If we fail this time, it will be a failure of imagination & then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand.
You're the strangest person I ever met, she said & I said you too & we decided we'd know each other a long time.
Laughter & Noise
There are lives I can imagine without children but none of them have the same laughter & noise.
She left pieces of her life behind her everywhere she went. It's easier to feel the sunlight without them, she said.
The light inside of one person is enough to change the world, so imagine what we can do with two.
I carry you with me into the world, into the smell of rain & the words that dance between people & for me, it will always be this way, walking in the light, remembering being alive together
Long Distance Hug
Since I can’t get to you right now, here is a long distance hug.
What are the odds that in the span of the infinite galactic tangle of stars and quasars and black holes, somehow we found each other?
Make me a tool of the resistance, I said to the angel, and when I woke up I wanted to hug everyone I could see.
I sometimes wake in the early morning & listen to the soft breathing of my children & I think to myself, this is one thing I will never regret & I carry that quiet with me all day long.
Pick a date and do the thing. There is no rule that says you have to feel ready before you say yes to your dreams.
I read once that the ancient Egyptians had fifty words for sand & the Inuit had a hundred words for snow. I wish I had a thousand words for love, but all that comes to mind is the way you move against me while you sleep & there are no words for that.
I hope it will be said we taught them to stand tall & proud, even in the face of history & the future was made new & whole for us all, one child at a time.
One of Us
Someday, the light will shine like a sun through my skin & they will say, What have you done with your life? & though there are many moments I think I will remember, in the end, I will be proud to say, I was one of us.
Time stands still best in moments that look suspiciously like ordinary life.
Tied together by stuff too difficult to explain to someone new
The real gift we have been given is the gift of being together.>
There are things you do because they feel right & they may make no sense & they may make no money & it may be the real reason we are here: to love each other & to eat each other’s cooking & say it was good.
For everything you've done and everything you are, thank you. You are the light that shines.
Side By Side
We sat side by side in the morning light & looked out at the future together.
Some Kind of Ride
feels like some kind of ride but it's turning out just to be life going absolutely perfectly
Imagine a world where we listen to everyone’s stories and learn we are not as different as we are the same.
Such Small Things
For a long time there were only your footprints & laughter in our dreams & even from such small things, we knew we could not wait to love you forever.
The best teachers are the ones who show you how to use your heart.>
I still remember the day the world took you back & there was never time to thank you for the thousand scattered moments you left behind to watch us while we slept.
There is no one who comes here that does not know this is a true map of the world, with you there in the center, making home for us all.
They came to sit & dangle their feet off the edge of the world & after awhile they forgot everything but the good & true things they would do someday.
Don't you hear it? she asked & I shook my head no & then she started to dance & suddenly there was music everywhere & it went on for a very long time & when I finally found words all I could say was thank you.
I am proud to see the one you are, and the one you are becoming. It is no small thing, this chance I have been given to walk the road beside you.
You don't know who they will be, the ones who open your eyes to life's wild magic, but when you find them, it will not be hard to tell.
I wish you could have been there for the sun & the rain & the long, hard hills. For the sound of a thousand conversations scattered along the road. For the people laughing & crying & remembering at the end. But, mainly, I wish you could have been there.
